We carry a very extensive collection of Masks. Both made locally and also abroad.
Our locally made masks are called 'Vejigantes' (pron: veh-he-gante). The tradition of these masks dates back to at least 500 years when the Slaves were brought from Africa to Puerto Rico by the Spaniards. The Slaves, believing that they had done something wrong, created these colorful masks thinking that the more colorful and dramatic they made these masks, it would keep away the evil spirits that made them slaves in the first place and bring peace and harmony to their group. The original masks were made from Cow Bladder.
Over the years, the materials have changed and we have very distinct styles, depending upon which part of the island you are from. From the South Side, Ponce, the typical material used is Paper Mache'. From the North Side, Loiza, the typical material used is Coconut Husk. Higuerda's (from the Gourd Family) is typical from the middle of the Island. There are many artisans on the island also producing Vejigantes in ceramics, as well. I hope you enjoy viewing some of the masks we have photographed. Please know we have many, many more in our store!
The Vejigante masks shown above are all locally produced.
